Meet Mengxin, who graduated with a Bachelor of Information Technology degree and a Master of Computing degree from ANU.

Why did you choose ANU?

I needed somewhere that allows me to concentrate on my studies and improve my academic achievements. ANU is known as the top University in Australia and Canberra is a lovely and quiet city. Hence, it became my dream university while I was preparing for my Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams in Sydney.

What was your Canberra experience like?

The people in Canberra are so warm-hearted and I met people from different cultural backgrounds. I was always amazed by their cultures and appreciated the diversity.

Did you live in a residential college? How was your experience?

I lived on campus at Lena Karmel Lodge. There were plenty of small to large gatherings hosted by the Senior Residents (SR) as well as various club and societies. I made a lot of friends while living there and was also able to host my own little events at the common rooms.

What is your favourite memory of ANU? Why?

ANU has a beautiful campus and a friendly environment. I was worried initially because I went to a private, Catholic, all-girls high school. It was a great school but due to the lack of interactions with boys, I panicked when I talked to them. STEM degrees nationally have a higher percentage of male students as compared to female students. However, all my classmates, tutors, lecturers, and project clients are very nice and patient. I managed to overcome my anxiety really quickly.

What extracurricular activities did you participate in at ANU?

I joined a formal dancing club called “Dancing through the Ages” and joined several language exchange groups; Mandarin, Japanese and English. I met a lot of wonderful people and we still keep in contact regularly.

After enrolling in COMP8715; Real-world Computing Project, I started attending a lot of technical workshops, showcases, pitches and conferences co-hosted by ANU and start-up organisations. ANU has provided me with opportunities to network and helped me to develop both my technical skills and entrepreneurial skills.

What are your immediate plans now that you’ve completed your degree?

My father is a well-known successful engineer in his profession back in China so I will be returning to China to assist him. I will also try to develop my own career at the same time.

What advice would you give to prospective international students preparing themselves for living in Canberra and studying at ANU?

Be confident and enjoy your student life at ANU. People over here at ANU are so friendly. Some computer science courses can be quite challenging but try to stay positive, confident and soon you will discover the endless possibilities that await you at ANU.
