Meet fifth year engineering student Jeremy,  who discusses his time at ANU as he enters into his final year of our elite Research and Development (R&D) degree.

Tell us a little bit about how you became an R&D student?

“I grew up in Canberra and was very fortunate to have a uni with a world-class reputation on my doorstep. I’ve always liked to aim high, so I choose the degree which I thought would challenge me and allow me to be rewarded for working hard.”

“I can definitely vouch for the R&D degree; this is one of the few opportunities to be involved in some world leading research at an undergraduate level.”

So what was it that attracted you to engineering?

“During high school I really enjoyed my Science and Maths subjects, especially solving complex problems. But I also loved the creative aspects of English class. I wanted to choose a degree and career which would let me be creative, but also have a solid grounding in science and technology to solve real problems. I saw a degree in Engineering as the perfect combination of problem solving, technical understanding and creative opportunity.”

Tell us about your ANU experience?

“The quality and dedication of the teachers, tutors and academics - it is clear that they all have a passion for their subject and for the students they pass knowledge onto. They reconsider the traditional method of teaching and provide students with a learning environment which is both more effective and more enjoyable.”

“ANU has provided me with opportunities to make industry contacts and gain valuable experience, while continuing to study full time. I have completed an internship with FEI Australia (Lithicon Australia), which works closely with the university in the field of digital imaging, and I’ve been working there casually ever since.”

“The best part of my internship was the unique experiences I was presented with, such as writing a scientific paper with leading experts or logging onto the supercomputer (Raijin) every day to work with images from an ANU designed state-of-the-art CT scanner.”

Can you tell us about the R&D projects you worked on?

“For my first project I investigated literature to find potential materials to use in thin film inorganic semiconductors. These semiconductors are a potentially cheaper alternative to silicon which has far better absorption properties, but worse electrical properties. A detailed analysis and comparison of electrical and optical properties allowed me to recommend the best suited material.”

“Looking at the dependence of open-circuit voltage on nanorod solar cell geometry I developed code to model the current-voltage characteristics of a nanorod solar cell, using the material decided upon in my previous project. Both this and the first project had the goal of reworking the design of solar cells so that they could potentially be massed produced much cheaper, but at a lower efficiency.”

“My last project looked at correcting the image artefact of 'Beam Hardening' which is caused by the multi-energy beam used in Computed Tomography (CT). Recently, interest has been placed on extremely high resolution CT scans for use especially in geological classification and generation of fluid flow models. In these applications, high fidelity data is a must, and therefore it is very important to correct image artefacts, deviations of the 3D image from the real object. I applied the method to simulated and experimental data and developed a completely new technique to help with the correction process.  This work was published in "Proceedings of SPIE, Developments in X-ray Tomography IX" which is available as a pdf thanks to ANU:

So what’s next for you after you graduate?

“My ANU experience has provided me with so many options and pathways into the workforce, I’m still to decide which one to pursue. I could end up working as a consultant, technical analyst, in mathematical modelling, working in a start-up, or any of the many other opportunities available!”
