Novel characterisation techniques for next generation solar cells



We are offering several Master/Honours projects in the field of photovoltaics (12, 18, or 24 credits/each). A common theme of these projects is the development of advanced characterisation and fabrication tools and techniques, and the investigation of properties and performances of photovoltaic materials and devices. The specific project scope and details will be discussed and agreed between the student and the supervisor.

These projects will be undertaken in our state-of-the-art solar laboratories, and our advanced fabrication and characterisation facilities. Our solar laboratories allow most of the semiconductor fabrication processes, such as diffusion (phosphorous and boron), ion implantation, oxidation, chemical vapour deposition, laser-based cutting and doping, photolithography, wet chemical processes, metal and semiconductor evaporation, metal plating, etc. Our characterisation facilities include state-of-the-art optical, electrical, and microscopic tools such as luminescence spectroscopy and imaging, solar simulator, transmission electron microscopes, focus ion beam tools, etc. You will also have access to the world-class semiconductor characterisation and fabrication facilities at the Australian National Fabrication Facility, the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics, and Microscopy Australia.

A unique feature of these projects are the opportunities to continue with a PhD study (fully funded) upon completion. Therefore, we are looking for candidates who wish to pursue a PhD after their Master/Honours study. The students should have some background in electronic circuits, basic mathematics and physics, and programming.
