Our Engineering Programs

Do you want to make a difference to society, or solve some of the world’s largest problems?
Would you like to make solar energy technology more efficient, invent the next generation of smartphones or create materials that support the growth of human cells?
If you’re creative, enjoy teamwork and mathematics or science - then engineering could be for you.
The unique interdisciplinary nature of this degree goes beyond traditional engineering fields. It will prepare you to design, analyse, and manage the complex systems that are prevalent in our society. You will be exposed to several engineering disciplines during your degree, as well as acquiring deep expertise in a discipline of your choice. For the first 18 months, you will study core foundation and engineering courses. After that, you can choose to specialise in anything from biomedical systems to mechatronics.
“Studying a systems engineering degree at ANU allowed me to combine my love of technology with my interest in leadership and management. It’s recognised globally, so the opportunities to work in Australia or overseas are endless.”
– Liam Highmore - Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
Biomedical Systems
This interdisciplinary field explores technologies interaction with the human body, and how engineering can make human lives better. Learn how to make technology like bionic eyes, prosthetic limbs and breath sensors that can detect diseases. This major combines nanotechnology, material engineering, imaging and sensing to help you learn to make functional devices that can be used for advanced medical outcomes.
Electronic and Communication Systems
This major teaches the art of communication through electronic devices, from smartphone communications to deep-sea cables for the internet. The field combines knowledge of digital and analogue electronic systems with data transmission and signal processing, to illustrate how signals are generated and transmitted all over the world. Learn the fundamentals of these cutting edge technologies that connect billions globally.
Mechanical and Material Systems
In this major, learn the science behind the behaviour of the natural and artificially made materials that make up the world around us. Study materials from ceramics and metals, to polymers and nanomaterials, and learn how to make new materials with interesting properties. Students will combine theories from mechanical and chemical fields, and discover their applications in energy, automotive, aerospace and transport.
Mechatronic Systems
In this major, learn about mechatronic systems and their applications – for example, Robots! Learn to combine mechanical, electronic and computing systems to make mechatronic prototypes and devices for applications in defence, space, medical, transport, mining and automotive industries.
Photonic Systems
This discipline studies the science behind controlling light to make electronic devices. Combine the art of the manipulation, transmission and storage of light data with communication systems and networks to design future technology. This major teaches you to the physics behind engineering the photons of light, for applications in sensing, quantum computing, energy generation, and forensic sciences.
Renewable Energy systems
Learn how energy can be harvested without harming our climate. This major teaches you the engineering technology behind generating electricity from renewable methods such as solar, wind, hydro and tidal. With a special focus on using solar energy, this major encompasses the basics of mechanical and electrical engineering. Discover the technological advancements that will help us achieve sustainable energy in the future.
